Toulouse, 14. September 2016 – Zum Auftakt des diesjährigen Cartoon Forums (13. – 16.

German Alliances in Animation – focusing on UK and Ireland

The German Producers Alliance has kicked off this year’s Cartoon Forum with an event promoting international co-productions on Tuesday afternoon. The Forum takes place from 13th – 16th September 2016 in Toulouse and is the biggest annual get-together of the European animation industry with more than 950 participants.

In the last years German Alliances in Animation had spotlighted the European partner regions Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands as well as Poland and the Baltic states. This the focus has been on Great Britain and Ireland and has been a great success again – with 100 representatives from Germany, Great Britain and Ireland participating. Afterwards, projects and ideas for joint co-operations were discussed.

Oliver Hyatt (Co-Founder and Creative Director of Blue-Zoo Animation, Chairman of Animation UK) and Andrew Fitzpatrick (Chairman of Monster! Entertainment) presented the development of their respective countries in the last ten years: coming out of a heavy crises they developed into a strong animation industry. The foundation for this development was achieved by a strong political engagement for the industry on three levels: tax break programs to foster the business, on top of that structural measures to incentivize start-up business in this industry and investments in education for the creative industry.

Afterwards Eibhlín Ní Mhunghaile (Creative Europe Desk Ireland – MEDIA Office Galway) has presented the updated film funding possibilities and conditions of the Creative Europe Desks.

Again the event has come along with a call for tender sponsored by the Animation Production Day which will be held in Stuttgart in 2017. A co-production project between Germany and UK/Ireland will be supported. This is the most important co-producing and co-financing platform in terms of animation in Germany. and collaborative animation projects between Germany and its partner countries are permitted to apply.

As in previous years, the German event in Toulouse was organised by Tania Reichert-Facilides (Freebird Pictures) and supported and sponsored by five German regional film funds: FilmFernsehFonds Bayern, Medien- und Filmgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg, Filmförderung Hamburg-Schleswig Holstein, Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung und nordmedia Film- und Mediengesellschaft Niedersachsen/Bremen. For the first time in 2016 Creative Europe joined in financing and realising the opening event of the German Producers Alliance as well.
The brochure „Animation made in Germany“ was updated and extended again for the event for the fourth time and can be downloaded here and from the website of German Films.
